The brand was first introduced by R.A. Patterson of Richmond, Virginia, in 1871 as a cut-plug chewing tobacco and soon after a cigarette. In 1905, the company was acquired by the American Tobacco Company (ATC), and Lucky Strike would later prove to be its answer to R.J. Reynolds' Camel.

In 1917, the brand started using the slogan "It's Toasted" to inform consumers about the manufacturing method in which the tobacco is toasted rather than sun-dried, a technique touted by marketers as making Lucky Strike more delicious for smokers. The abbreviation "L.S.M.F.T."("Lucky Strike means fine tobacco") was introduced on the package in the same year.

Lucky Strike cigarettes or Luckies was the best selling cigarette brand in USA during the 1930's. They were first introduced as cigarettes in the year 1905 by R.A. Patterson in Richmond. This brand was later acquired by the American Tobacco Company and is also supported by the British American Tobacco in the areas of promotion and distribution. They were at the start used as chewing tobacco product and later on developed into cigarettes, which was without filter. The brand began to grow after it was sold to American Tobacco Company in the 1900's.

Not only the product but also its packaging is very famous. Till 1940's the brand used packs made of dark green color, this was changed to white in the 40's. To promote their brand the company rolled out numerous slogans, one of them was "Lucky Strike Green has gone to War." The brand claimed that green color was changed due to the lack of copper which is used to make green color. Since copper was needed during World War II, they were not available. Another reason for switching to white is to appeal to more female audience. The manufactures were well aware of the fact that their product was not very famous with women so they made a strategic move to try and gain more female customers, and it worked very well for them. The cigarette producers had successfully found a way to boost sales, while appearing patriotic at the same time, something many people especially the customers in the United States loved and the sales of this brand of cigarettes sky rocketed.
